Frederick, Md. - Members of an immigrants rights group and opponents of illegal immigration faced off as Frederick County Commissioners held a hearing on their legislative package on Tuesday.
County commissioners have declined to support both a measure that would deny services to illegal immigrants and one that would require a count of illegal immigrants in county public schools.
But immigrant rights group CASA de Maryland and the Frederick Justice Coalition, a group of local churches, organized a press conference Tuesday to voice their opposition to these proposals in front of Winchester Hall. Members of Help Save Maryland, an anti-illegal immigration group, came out to protest.
The county's legislative package does not include a proposal on a schools count, but two commissioners and the county sheriff sent the proposal to the county's delegation in hopes it would be introduced in the next session.
