Arlington, Va. - Arlington County is grappling with a budget shortfall that looks to be bigger than officials thought just two weeks ago.
County Manager Ron Carlee said Wednesday that the county is now expecting a $14 million budget shortfall, rather than $10 million. The county has implemented a hiring freeze and is considering staff reductions.
Revenue from real estate taxes is expected to drop for the first time in more than a decade.
Carlee says he is also expecting budget cuts of $20 million or $30 million for the next fiscal year.
Arlington has grown accustomed to dramatic increases in funding for schools and other services because of its strong real estate market.
