THURMONT, Md. - Fire and rescue officials in Thurmont confirm that two people have died in a large house fire in the 12800 block of Catoctin Furnace Road.

Most people in the neighborhood said they new the two men as 'the Erics.' They are talking about Eric Forrest and Eric Sanger, described as best buddies their entire lives and roommates for the last year.

The pair died early Friday morning when the small house they rented in Thurmont burned to the ground. Over 30 firefighters were called to the home, which had flames emerging from three of its sides, around 3:30 a.m., but it was too late.

As the word of their deaths spread around the small town of Thurmont their friends gathered in disbelief.

"He was my best friend; still can't believe it," said Jeff Powell.

Eric Forrest was a father of two teenage children and Eric Sanger leaves behind a six-year-old.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
