(Sports Network) - Martin Brodeur made 26 saves to pick up the shutout and move within one of Terry Sawchuk's all-time record, as the New Jersey Devils took a 2-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

The shutout was the first of the season for Brodeur, who now has 102 in his storied career. The Hall-of-Famer Sawchuk recorded 103 during a 21-season career, and Brodeur can have a chance to tie the mark in the Devils' next game, a road contest Thursday against the Rangers.

Jamie Langenbrunner scored and Zach Parise added an empty-net goal for the Devils, who picked up their first home win of the season. They were 0-3-0 so far at Prudential Center, which included a loss to Atlanta on Friday.

"It was a tough game, there wasn't a lot of room out there. Both teams played pretty well defensively," Parise said. "For us to get the first win at home, it feels pretty good for us."

Cam Ward made 27 saves in the loss, Carolina's third in a row.

It was a scoreless tie through two periods, with Ward making 11 saves in the first and Brodeur stopping nine shots. Ward then made five saves in the second, while Brodeur made seven.

But Langenbrunner gave New Jersey the advantage just 26 seconds into the third.

The Devils advanced the puck up-ice, and Rob Niedermayer got the puck on the left side. Langenbrunner trailed the play and got a pass from behind the goal line from Niedermayer, then buried the puck in the net to put his team on the board.

"When they scored early in the third period, you hope that we have time and opportunities to cash one in," Ward said. "Once again, we didn't have it. We have to compete much harder on a nightly basis and try to get those goals in those dirty areas."

Brodeur made the lead stand with 10 saves in the final period, and Parise notched his empty-netter with 40 seconds left.

Game Notes

Brodeur is already the all-time leader in goaltender wins, as he has 561. He passed Patrick Roy (551) last season...Parise also had an assist...The Hurricanes play at the Islanders on Wednesday.
