WASHINGTON - ABC 7 News reporter Greta Kreuz had the chance to sit down with Elizabeth Edwards for an exclusive interview where she talked about her ongoing battle against breast cancer.
Elizabeth Edwards lived a charmed life. She was a lawyer, mother and wife of aspiring Senator John Edwards. But it all came crashing down in October 2004.
"I felt a bump in my right breast. It felt like a plum honestly. It was very smooth and I thought it was probably a cyst," she said.
But it was cancer. A lumpectomy and chemo later, she was back on the busy side until 2007 when the cancer came back. This time, it was stage 4. It was in her bones and inoperable.
Edwards now spends her days as a mother, as well as speaking, writing, and pushing research. She focuses on living -- even if the odds are against her.
"I hope it's not true but that's the likelihood. Cancer will probably win. Why would I give it anymore days than it may already take? That's the choice I make," she said.
Edwards has lived through a lot, including her 16-year-old son's death in a car accident in 1996. "Nothing compares to Wade's death. No, not even the cancer," she said.
Not even the scandal that has dogged her husband, including revelations of an affair with a campaign worker who had a baby -- some say his baby -- even as Edwards was battling cancer. She says only that her husband has been supportive and that they are still writing their story.
Said Edwards, "John said, 'Perhaps not the great love story that we hoped, but maybe a great love story nonetheless.' [It's] 'till death do you part -- because that's what I want."
She says her prognosis is unclear but no longer believes God will cure her -- only that he will give her the strength to endure. Then, ever the mom, she had to zip back to Chapel Hill for her son Jack's Halloween party.
