(Sports Network) - Colorado Avalanche forward Darcy Tucker was taken off the ice on a stretcher after taking a hard hit along the boards in the second period of a 5-4 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday.

With 14:34 remaining in the second period, Carolina's Tuomo Ruutu put a hard hit on Tucker and sent him flying into the boards. Tucker wasn't expecting the hit, and his head hit the boards before he went flying to the ice.

The trainers and medical staff rushed onto the ice as Tucker laid motionless at first. After a few minutes, Tucker showed signs of movement and gave a thumbs up to the crowd as he was taken off the ice on a backboard. Tucker had a gash on his forehead from hitting the boards.

Tucker was taken to the hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

Ruutu was issued a five-minute major for boarding and a 10-minute game misconduct for the hit.
