FREDERICK, Md. - Sitting in jail could get a lot more expensive if the Frederick County sheriff has his way.
Sheriff Chuck Jenkins wants to charge inmates $10 for every day they're housed at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center.
Jenkins asks, "Why should the public support the bad guys?"
He adds, "I think it's unfair that the taxpayer continue bearing the burden for people who are incarcerated for breaking the law."
His proposal, which also includes a $35 co-pay for a dental visit and a $25 tuition for those who pursue a GED, has yet to be approved by county commissioners. Most, not all, taxpayers ABC 7's Brad Bell spoke to liked the idea.
"They have to repay their debt to society somehow," said Armie Roopnarini, a Frederick resident.
"I think if they are locked up, and they have nothing coming in, I'm not sure how you could expect them to pay something out, " said Lisa Hughs, a Frederick resident.
That view is shared by inmate Justin Freland. According to court records, he's a frequent guest in the county jail and thinks he's paying enough already.
"And on top of that the economy is already bad and by ten dollars a day is just going to put more people in debt because not too many people that's in jail have that money to provide for that," Freland said.
Sheriff Jenkins admits he could probably only collect what he calls a fair portion, between a third and a half of the fees. But he says that should add up to $300,000 to $500,0000 a year.
Jenkins added the money will only be collected from people who are convicted and sentenced. Provisions will be made for those who cannot pay, he said.
The Frederick County Commissioners are expected to vote on Jenkins' proposals this week. If approved, the measures would be sent to state lawmakers for their consideration. State law governs the fees that are charged to inmates.
