ARLINGTON, Va. - With one week until Virginia's gubernatorial election, an exclusive poll for WJLA-TV shows Republican Bob McDonnell retaining his commanding lead.

The SurveyUSA poll dated Oct. 27 shows McDonnell with a 17-point lead over Democrat Creigh Deeds, 58-41. McDonnell maintains his lead across most demographics, including age, sex and income. Independents are breaking 2-1 for McDonnell, 60-38.

Thirty-eight percent of abortion rights supporters say they will vote for McDonnell, twice the percentage, 19, of anti-abortion voters who say they will vote for Deeds.

The poll also shows McDonnell with a 58-41 lead across Northern Virginia, where Democrats have done better in recent elections. Deeds has only led once in Northern Virginia, according to SurveyUSA polling, that was in the Sept. 4 poll, when Deeds led by one point, 48-47.

Republicans retain commanding leads in all of the statewide races. Republican Bill Bolling is beating Democrat Jody Wagner by 14 points, 56-42, in the race for lieutenant governor. In the attorney general race, Republican Ken Cuccinelli leads Democrat Steve Shannon by 16 points, 57-41.

The SurveyUSA poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percent.
