WASHINGTON - The Department of Homeland Security is issuing a warning Thursday regarding a new application for BlackBerry phones.
Officials say that a new application called PhoneSnoop could be used to spy on your private phone conversations. The application works by someone installing the application in your BlackBerry that and then remotely triggering the speakerphone. They can hear you and the people with whom you are talking.
“You can just spy on people with the phone,” said District resident Sean Burrowes.
Once the application is installed on your BlackBerry, the person who installs it can remotely trigger the speakerphone. This will essentially turn your phone on so they can listen in on you and the people with whom you are talking.
Some people say they can't understand why anyone would want to listen into another’s life without them knowing it.
It might sound creepy and obscure, but the DHS advises to keep your BlackBerry with you and don't leave it where someone could grab it and install the application without your knowledge.
If you think someone might have installed the PhoneSnoop application, officials say you should check your BlackBerry. The application often leaves a distinctive icon, but not always. Someone could be listening to you without you knowing.
