PIGSAH, Md. - The Charles County chapter of the NAACP
(web | news) is calling on the Maryland attorney general to investigate a deadly police shooting. They claim the shooting never should have happened.
Forty-four-year-old Cornelius Warren was shot and killed after police pulled him over October 2 in Charles County, Maryland. But what happened before the shooting is in dispute.
"I just wanna know what happened. The truth, that's what I want," says Warren's brother, Sherwin.
Police say Warren was pulled over for speeding and officers found marijuana in his SUV. They also say, during the stop, Warren who had gotten out of his SUV, jumped back in and tried to take off.
Police say Warren reached for an officer's gun, there was a struggle, followed by two deputies shooting Warren.
Warren's brother, however, says Cornelius left behind a wife and seven children in Indian Head.
"We're all pretty much devastated by what happened," said Sherwin Warren.
With the case still under investigation, police say they can't reveal how many times Warren was shot.
Friday, the Charles County chapter of the NAACP claimed the shooting and use of force were unnecessary after watching video from the deputies' dash cam.
"The shooting was unwarranted. That the action of the police officer led to the fatal shooting of Mr. Warren," stated William Braxton with the Charles County NAACP. "The public needs to see this dash cam."
The Charles County Sheriff's Department says they are still investigating the shooting. They say they are not naming the two deputies involved in the shooting for safety concerns.
