ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?WE'RE LAUNCHING A NEW COVERAGE INITIATIVE: ABC-7 PROJECT IMMIGRATION.
OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS WE'LL BE LOOKING AT ALL ASPECTS OF THE IMMIGRATION ISSUE IN THE WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN AREA AND ABROAD.
WE'RE STARTING IN PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, WHERE A TRIO OF FILMAKERS HAVE BEEN DOCUMENTING THE HEATED DEBATE OVER ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.

Story:

THE FILM 9500 LIBERTY GAINS ITS NAME FROM THE LOCATION OF THIS WALL.
THE BANNER HANGING HERE HAS BECOME A SYMBOL OF RACIAL TENSIONS IN PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY.

From "9500 Liberty": "Learn how to speak English!! (I speak English just fine) You do, but these people don't."

THREE FILMMAKERS BEGAN WORK ON THE DOCUMENTARY MONTHS AGO.

Eric Byler, Filmmaker: "About three weeks ago, we realized that we really should be sharing this information with people sooner."

THEY BEGAN POSTING SHORT FILM CLIPS ON YOUTUBE, ALLOWING VIEWERS TO RESPOND WITH COMMENTS OR THEIR OWN VIDEOS.

THIS CLIP IN PARTICULAR HAS RECEIVED OVER 38,000 VIEWS.

Clip from "9500 Liberty": "I particularly don't enjoy speaking Spanish in my country."

BUT IN THE PROCESS -

(CHANTING)

THEY SAY THEY'VE UNCOVERED A VERY EMPASSIONED AUDIENCE, AND AN ATMOSPHERE OF FEAR AND VIOLENCE.

Annabel Park, Filmmaker: "One comment in particular that we received online that said something like, Annabel Park will be dancing from a tree."

BUT FOR EACH OF THEM, THIS IS A LABOR OF LOVE.

Annabel Park, Filmmaker: "So some of the things that i'm hearing sound very familiar. For instance, I was told to go home. I was told to learn English."

Jeff Mann, Filmmaker: "Being an Asian American myself, I know the opportunities I was given here."

BY SHARING THIS FILM RIGHT AWAY THEY'RE HOPING TO DEPOLITICIZE THE ISSUE AND EXAMINE ITS EFFECTS ON INDIVIDUALS.

Eric Byler, Filmmaker: "As a resident of PW Co. I really would like to see us become one community again."

I strongly disagree that 9500 Liberty's view is bias. I believe that their view is the view of most people of color in Prince William County, Virginia. The police department as well as the commonwealth attorneys office has a long history of racial bias. It has a history of pursuing aggressively its people of color just on the word of a white person. Even when there is no evidence to support a wrong doing on the part of the person of color. Prince William County will though allow a police officer to commit perjury in regard to the sexual assault of two African-American girls by a white male who never got arrested even with medical documentation to support their allegations. Prince William county, under Deane and Ebert allowed the death of two African-American boys because their lives were not valued. Some of you might remember Donnell Robinson a victim of what many consider to be a racist regime. I applaud 9500 Liberty for choosing to shine a light on a government/county that for far too long has gotten away with treating its people of color with less respect and concern than its white residents.
