Company Recalls Beef Possibly Tainted by E.Coli

Giant Food Stores operates the Giant stores in Pennsylvania. It operates stores under the name Martin's Food Markets and Foodsource in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.
However, a sister grocery chain - Giant Food of Landover, Md., - was affected by the recall, said Andrea Astrachan, vice president of consumer affairs for Stop-n-Go Supermarket Co. and Giant Food. Giant Food of Maryland operates stores under the name Giant in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Both Giant of Maryland and Giant of Carlisle are owned by the same parent company, Royal Ahold of the Netherlands.
No illnesses were immediately reported due to Cargill's recall.
The agribusiness giant produced the beef between Oct. 8 and Oct. 11 at a plant in Wyalusing, Pa., and distributed it to retailers across the country. A spokeswoman for Cargill said 10 states were affected - Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
Cargill Meat Solutions, based in Wichita, Kan., is the umbrella organization of Cargill's beef, pork and turkey businesses. The Wyalusing plant produces 200 million pounds of ground beef annually.
Cargill Inc., based in Wayzata, Minn., is one of the nation's largest privately held companies. It makes food ingredients, moves commodities around the world and runs financial commodities trading businesses.

The news report did not mention whether Safeway ground beef was involved in the recall. However, I did a search and Safeway does indeed appear to be included in the recall: http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/071103/20071103005021.html?.v=1
