Democrats Dispute Ehrlich Surplus Claim

Former governor Robert Ehrlich claims that Maryland had a budget surplus when he left office in January. Maryland Democrats say that's not so.
The state Democratic Party says Ehrlich committed to putting away 670 million dollars to be used in the upcoming fiscal year. That's when Maryland will face a 1.7 billion-dollar budget shortfall. Democrats point out that Ehrlich's budget secretary testified about the need to spend that money.
Ehrlich disputes the Democrats' claims. Former first lady Kendel Ehrlich said on the Ehrlichs' WBAL Radio show this morning that the former governor left a billion-dollar surplus that was squandered earlier this year when lawmakers declined to do anything to address the state's fiscal problems.
Maryland lawmakers are currently considering several revenue proposals, including a sales tax hike, to make up for the budget deficit.
