Convention Center Renamed in Honor of Washington

The Washington Convention Center is being renamed the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. It will be the largest building in D.C. to honor a local elected official.

A private ceremony will be held Monday for Washington's family, friends and city officials.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Officials say employees started calling the building the Walter E. Washington Convention Center about 45 days ago as part of a campaign to get the public to use the entire name.

President Lyndon Johnson appointed Washington mayor in 1967. He was the first black mayor of a major U.S. city. Washington was elected mayor in 1974, the year after Congress passed the Home Rule Charter.
