The Washington Convention Center is being renamed the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. It will be the largest building in D.C. to honor a local elected official.
A private ceremony will be held Monday for Washington's family, friends and city officials.
Officials say employees started calling the building the Walter E. Washington Convention Center about 45 days ago as part of a campaign to get the public to use the entire name.
President Lyndon Johnson appointed Washington mayor in 1967. He was the first black mayor of a major U.S. city. Washington was elected mayor in 1974, the year after Congress passed the Home Rule Charter.
