Hundreds of Fugitives Surrender

A three-day program for people wanted on outstanding warrants has resulted in 530 people surrendering at a D.C. church. The government-run "safe surrender" program for fugitives was aimed at resolving nonviolent crimes. Officials say about 30 percent of the cases were for traffic offenses, and about 70 percent involved criminal charges.
On Saturday, the final day of the program, 245 people turned themselves in. Of the hundreds who surrendered since Thursday, 10 were arrested.
Organizers say the first person in line Friday walked to the Bible Way Church from Landover, Maryland to honor his mother's birthday request that he surrender.
Another man brought his father to surrender on a warrant in a three-year-old drug case. The 62-year-old man pleaded guilty and was given six months' probation.
The Washington area has about 28,000 outstanding warrants, including 15,000 for misdemeanors.
