D.C. Convention Center Renamed for City's First Mayor

The Washington Convention Center officially got a new name on Monday.
Mayor Adrian Fenty will make the dedication at a private ceremony for city officials and friends and family of Walter E. Washington, who was appointed D.C.'s mayor by President Lyndon Johnson in 1967. He became the first black mayor of a major U.S. city. The convention center was renamed in honor of Washington, making it the largest building in D.C. to honor a local elected official.
The private ceremony was held at the convention center.
Officials say employees started calling the building the Walter E. Washington Convention Center about 45 days ago as part of a campaign to get the public to use the entire name.
