Some D.C. lawmakers are looking skeptically at the police chief's crime-fighting initiatives after violence in the district continued to rise last weekend.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier called another "All Hands on Deck" last weekend, bringing out all officers onto patrol. While an increase in arrests was reported and police presence was heavier, there were still 62 violent crimes, including two homicides and three sexual abuse cases. That's up from 34 from the same three-day period last year. Council member Phil Mendelson said he thinks "All Hands on Deck" is more about catching criminals than deterring crime.

Many of the 481 arrests made from Friday night to Sunday were for minor offenses like drug or traffic violations.

I'm confused I thought it was the job of the police to lock up criminals. Silly me I thought that is how you deter people from crime, by showing them it doesn't pay. I guess the DC law makers think the money would be better sent on teaching thugs arts and crafts.
