The D.C. Council wants to encourage more people to ride bikes in the city by requiring new buildings to have more bike parking.

The council adopted legislation Tuesday that requires all new apartment and condo complexes to include one bike space for every three units. Commercial property owners have to make sure that at least 5 percent of vehicle parking spaces are set aside for bikes.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion? The bill was introduced by Ward 6 Council member Tommy Wells. A stricter version of the legislation that would have put the same requirements on existing apartment and condo buildings failed to pass several weeks ago.

Wells said even if there are bike lanes, not enough people will use them unless there's parking on either end of the ride.
