The Georgia Avenue-Petworth Metro Station has a new look.
The artwork of two local artists, sculptor Lisa Scheer and poet E. Ethelbert Miller, was recently installed at the east entrance of the station. Scheer's 5-foot high, 6-foot wide bronze sculpture of a stylized leaf incorporates an untitled poem by Miller. The sculpture rests atop a granite base and an inlaid circular paver. Michael McBride, Metro's Manager of Art in Transit, said a panel was chosen to select artwork that would be thought-provoking. "The artists took the notion to heart and decided to use a leaf to remind viewers of the seasons of life and the importance of embracing presence," he said. "Sometimes as we rush here and there, it's good to stop and give significance to the moment."
The project was sponsored by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities and is the most recent installment of Metro's Art in Transit Program. The program installs artwork throughout the Metrorail system to enhance the traveling experience of Metro customers and works with various artists, community groups, government agencies and businesses to use seltected artwork to caputre the spirit and vitality of the area.
