The National Park Service said that most of the unidentified oily substance found on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in September has been removed.

It's just in time for the 25th anniversary celebration of the wall this weekend. Park spokesman Bill Line said 95 to 98 percent of the substance has been cleaned off. He said deeper cleaning may harm the memorial's surface and that sunlight will probably make the rest fade away.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?U.S. Park Police determined the substance to be vandalism. At least 14 of the 140 inscribed panels appeared to be stained with dark blotches at the bottom of the stone curb on the base of the wall.

A reward of $10,000 is being offered for information on whoever was responsible for the vandalism.

Wowzer
I've never been fond of the hole-in-the-ground design but I'm certainly glad they've been able to remove this substance.

Takes a real sleazeball to do something like that.
