A faulty heating element in a barn at the National Zoo may have started a small fire Friday that caused minor damage. About 10 farm animals were evacuated from the barn when the fire broke out Friday morning. It was discovered about 7 a.m. in a donkey stall.
Zoo spokeswoman Pamela Baker-Masson says four donkeys, four goats and two cows were evacuated from the Kids Farm Barn. No people or animals were injured.

Baker-Masson says the zoo's police chief, Russ Walkowich, extinguished the fire with a garden hose.
