Police have identified the driver of the fatal 1-car crash that occurred Monday in Wheaton.
15-year-old Hong Vinh Le of Silver Spring was driving the 2002 Toyota Corolla that was occupied by four male teens traveling westbound on Bonifant Road approaching Alderton Road. For unknown reasons, the car left the roadway on the eastbound side and struck several trees before coming to rest. Hong was driving without any type of license. A rear-seat passenger, 17-year-old Christian G. Cruz, was pronounced dead at the scene. The two other passengers in the car were 15-year-old Simon Nguyen of Silver Spring, who was sitting in the back seat, and 15-year-old Christian Pleitez-Reyes of Silver Spring, who was sitting in the front seat. Nguyen and Pleitez-Reyes were wearing seatbelts; Cruz was not. Police have determined that the car was going too fast fast for the conditions and that there was no evidence of drugs or alcohol.
As is standard procedure in the investigation of a fatal traffic collision, no charges will be filed until the conclusion of the investigation and after consultation with the Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office. Anyone with information about this collision should call Montgomery County Police at (301) 840-2435.
