Capital Area Food Bank Wraps Up Anacostia Farmers Market

The Anacostia Farmers Market is closing down Wednesday after providing fresh produce to D.C. residents for nine years.
The market was initiated in 1999 as a collaboration between the Capital Area Food Bank and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Clagett Farm. It was launched to create an urban/rural connection and to encourage fresh produce in a healthy diet.
However, the Southeast market never reached the desired impact in the community and served only about 120 shoppers per week. The Food Bank had been subsidizing the farmers to ensure their participation, but at an average transaction of $4 per customer the group felt the market was not longer a worthy investment.
The Anacostia Market was also one of the only local farmers markets to accept electronic transactions including Food Stamps through EBT, but authorities say that did not make a significant difference in the number of patrons or transactions.
