A 72-year-old woman, hit by a car Thursday evening on Connecticut Avenue NW, died Friday.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Connecticut and Davenport Street NW. The woman was taken to Washington Hospital Center in critical condition and later died.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Police said the driver the of the car that hit the woman stayed on the scene of the accident. It's not clear if that driver will face any charges.

Connecticut Avenue was closed while police investigated.

On Friday, police were set up along Connecticut to help pedistrians cross the road. Frequent walks said the area is dangerous. "I saw someone on a motorcycle pop a wheelie right in the middle of the road and the second anything opens up, people treat it like it's the Indy 500," said pedestrian Stephanie Webb.

Others said, "people have passed me from behind and gone through the red light! I've come close to getting hit a couple of times."

Pedistrians said they were grateful for the police presence, but worried about cross Connecticut without them.

"Anybody using the crosswalk here has no protection whatsover because the cars are, assuming, they think of this as a major highway."
