Fairfax County Schools are considering redrawing district lines for high schools, which is creating controversy among parents.

Parents said they picked their homes in Fairfax County, for their kids, to determine where they would go to school. Officials said several schools are getting over crowded, like Westfield and Chantilly while the new school, South Lakes is under enrollment.

Parent Sean Jones said," if they re-district us, next year I'll have a 9th grader at one school and a 12th grader at another school.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Parents against the move started an on-line petition that has already gotten over 2,100 signatures. There is also a petition supporting re-districting.

High school rankings could have something to do with opinions. "Newsweek" ranks Chantilly and Westfield in the 100's out of 1,300 high schools. South Lakes ranks in the 800's.

"Whose game do you go to, whose PTA do you support... driving in two different directions," said Jones.

There are still several more public hearings on the issue before the school board makes their decision early next year.

mythoughts
I dont blame the parents. they have every right to be concerned. choosing a place to live involves finding the best school for your child. i couldnt imagine moving to the district just because i can get a house and sacrificing my kids education for it. crazy.....but perhaps the re-zoning will help the school that isnt doing so well. it still takes a period of time before this actually shows. on the other hand, i am not surprised. with the immigration and so many people in the area i wouldnt be surprised if more of this didnt go on. you have to be prepared for the changes coming in this country. nothing seems to be guaranteed or set in stone.
