Auditor Criticizes D.C. Finance System

A D.C. auditor said her repeated warnings about problems at the city's tax office were greeted with a dismissive attitude.
Deborah Nichols testified Thursday at a D.C. Council hearing about the alleged multimillion dollar theft of public funds. She said there is a "lack of cooperation" from the Office of the Chief Financial Officer when it comes to providing information. And she said the office is "adversarial in nature."
Federal prosecutors have said two mid-level tax office employees, along with several accomplices, stole more than $20 million in public funds by fabricating property tax refund checks since at least 2001.
Chief Financial Officer Natwar Ghandi said 15 employees have now been removed or resigned.
