Annapolis Council to Vote on Plastic Bag Ban
posted 8:16 am Mon November 19, 2007 - Annapolis, Md.
Annapolis is poised to consider what could be the nation's toughest plastic bag ban, and the first on the East Coast.
The city council has scheduled a vote at Monday's meeting. Some local grocers are opposed to the ban, but supporters say the ban is needed because plastic shopping bags are clogging waterways and landfills. Alderman Sam Shropshire, who introduced the proposal, claims he has the votes to get the ban approved. But opponents are developing a competing proposal that would include urging residents to voluntarily use reusable bags that would be issued by the city.
