Poll: Virginia Voters Deadlocked in Clinton-Giuliani Matchup
posted 1:09 pm Mon November 19, 2007 - Rosslyn, Va.
With Virginia increasingly seen as a "purple" state, a new poll shows the leading presidential contenders for each party in a virtual tie, one year before the 2008 vote.

If the election were held Monday, both Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-New York) and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) would garner the support of 45 percent of registered voters, according to the poll conducted by SurveyUSA and sponsored by WJLA. Ten percent of voters remained undecided.

But the numbers would change were Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) to be the Republican nominee in 2008. McCain would win a head-to-head matchup with Clinton, 51 percent to 42 percent. According to the poll, McCain was the preferred Republican candidate for Virginia voters, and was the only candidate who could beat Clinton.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Clinton outpolls former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-Massachusetts) 48 percent to 41 percent and former Gov. Mike Huckabee 50 percent to 40 percent.

The Democrat's second strongest candidate in primary election polls, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Illinois) does not fare as well against McCain or Giuliani. Virginia voters prefer McCain to Obama 51 percent to 41 percent and prefer Giuliani 47 percent to 43 percent.

Obama does well against two other possible Republican nominees, out polling Romney 48 percent to 41 percent and Huckabee 50 percent to 38 percent.

Virginia has voted for a Republican presidential candidate in every election since 1968. But Virginia Democrats have seen three statewide victories in recent years - the elections of Gov. Mark Warner in 2001, Gov. Tim Kaine in 2005, and Sen. Jim Webb in 2006. Democratic party leaders hope the state's exploding population growth in northern Virginia could help turn the state Democratic in 2008, especially when the popular former Governor Mark Warner is on the ballot to win the seat of retiring Sen. John Warner.

The survey of 542 registered voters was conducted November 9-11. The margin of error was plus or minus 4.3 percent.

According to a recent Zogby phone poll, when a blind bio question was posed to a target sample of 1,009 likely voters nationwide, including Democrats and independents, Ron Paul was the big winner among that universe of voters, winning 33%, compared to 19% for Giuliani, 15% for Romney, and 13% for Thompson. In a blind bio question people are told what a candidate stands for without their name being mentioned, and than asked if they agree with them. I would hate to see Hillary become president as well, I feel she will simply pick up where Bush left off. Ron Paul is the winner, for getting out of Iraq, having our borders protected, ending birthright citizenship and getting rid of Real ID.
