Amtrak: 40 Trains Affected by Weekend Disruption
posted 6:11 pm Mon November 19, 2007 - WASHINGTON
Amtrak says 40 of its trains carrying about 15,000 passengers were affected by Sunday's electrical problems in a crucial Hudson River tunnel on the northeast corridor. Amtrak spokesman Cliff Black said Monday that there was a partial break in an electrical wire near the tunnel's western entrance that powers the trains. He said the break happened internally, and was not visible to inspectors.
The problem caused Amtrak to close the tunnel, which is also used by New Jersey Transit, for more than six hours. A parallel tunnel that trains normally could have used instead was closed for scheduled maintenance.
During the disruption, southbound trains had to stop at Penn Station in New York City, and northbound trains stopped in Newark, N.J. To get across the river, passengers had to get off and catch a train on New Jersey's PATH system to meet another Amtrak train on the other side.
New Jersey Transit said the outage stalled more than 24 of its trains with an estimated 17,000 riders.
