Tax Embezzlement Suspect Remains in Custody

One of the women who allegedly helped D.C. government tax employees steal more than $20 million in tax refunds will remain in police custody.
A federal judge ruled Monday that Jayrece Turnbull posed a serious risk of fleeing before her trial because she has contacts and property in other countries and possibly funds that could help her flee. Turnbull is the niece of Harriette Walters, the D.C. tax manager accused of being the mastermind behind a scam that bilked the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue of more than $20 million with phony property tax refunds.
Prosecutors said that Turnbull cashed the checks Walters wrote to fake companies and deposited money in numerous locations and bank accounts.
The prosecutor Monday told the judge that Turnbull has contacts and a home in the Dominican Republic and had traveled extensively in that area and parts of Europe.
