Outgoing Board Chairman Says Amtrak Back on Track
   posted 6:31 am Wed November 21, 2007 - Washington
Amtrak's outgoing chairman says the national passenger railroad has restored its credibility and is not the financial basket case it was five years ago. But David Laney, whom President Bush did not nominate for another term on the board, says that there are probably some in the White House who would have preferred to see Amtrak eliminated.

Laney has served as chairman since 2003.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion? His five-year term expires at the end of November and the board of directors has chosen Donna McLean, a transportation consultant and board member since last year to replace him.

Laney says his one regret was Amtrak's failure to resolve a protracted labor dispute. Most Amtrak workers have been without a contract since the end of 1999.
