Pedestrian Killed in Freak Accident

Investigators have identified the woman who was killed Wednesday when a tractor-trailer's real axle broke off while making a turn in Silver Spring, in what investigators described as a freak accident.
Thirty-five-year-old Norma Almeraya-Soria was trapped under the trailer. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Witnesses say she was walking or standing at the corner when the truck began turning and the axles and wheel carriage came off. Those who saw it happen say there was no way she could avoid it.
"This is terrible. This is really heart-breaking. I'm really feeling bad for the person and everything. It's really sad," said Kenrick Mohan, who witnessed the accident.
Rescue crews were called to the intersection of Columbia Pike (US-29) and Stewart Lane around 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Authorities are focusing on trying to figure out what caused the axle carriage to separate from the trailer.
