Amtrak Expects 70 Percent Increase Over Average Ridership
   posted 11:24 am Wed November 21, 2007 - Washington
Amtrak has several sold-out trains running Wednesday and expects holiday travel to be at least as busy as last year. Amtrak spokeswoman Tracy Connell says the national passenger railroad carried more than 600,000 passengers last year between the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and the Monday after.

Today is typically Amtrak's busiest day of the year. On the day before Thanksgiving last year, Amtrak carried 115,000 passengers. Connell says that's about a 70 percent increase over an average day.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?About half of Amtrak's passengers are traveling on the busy northeast corridor between Boston, New York and Washington.

Connell says passengers should arrive about 45 minutes to an hour early to pick up tickets if their train is already sold out. But there are still seats available, depending on the time. Connell says the quietest days to travel are Thursday and Saturday.
