PEPCO Donates Over 800 Smoke Alarms
posted 3:11 pm Wed November 21, 2007 - Prince George's County, Md.
PEPCO donated 830 smoke alarms Wednesday for distribution to citizens and residents of Prince George's County.
The announcement comes 20 years after a tragic fire consumed a Seat Pleasant home Thanksgiving Day, injuring eight adults and killing six chidren. Fire investigators determined the cause of the fire to be accidental due to a child playing with matches. The department annually remembers each Thanksgiving morning the tragedy and what role it played. The fire had such an impact on the department that a lifesaving program was developed and implemented to ensure working smoke alarms. The Post Incident Neighborhood Intervention Program (PINIP) is still in use Wednesday after a signfiicant incident, where fire and rescue personnel visit communities and talk with homeowners about fire safety and prevention tips as well as to ensure a working smoke alarm is in their homes. A spin-off of the PINIP is in its second year in Prince George's County with the Proactive Residential Information Distribution Effort (PRIDE) program, with nearly 11,000 homes visited.
The Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department has provided information about a Juvenile Fire Setter Program that is available to citizens and residents who are interested in young children and fire. Anyone who is interested in the program should call (301) 583-1880.
Additionally, citizens and residents who need a working smoke alarm installed in their home, free of charge, can call the Department's Livable Communities Smoke Alarm Hotline at (301) 864-SAFE.
