Three People Hurt in Ambulance Crash

Three people, including two firefighters, were injured Wednesday when an ambulance collided with an SUV in Mount Pleasant. Authorities say ambulance 28 out of Cleveland Park was en route to a call when it collided with the SUV at 18th Street and Park Road about noon, causing the SUV to slide into an empty bus stop.
Two firefighters from the ambulance, along with the SUV driver, were taken to the hospital. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Authorities say the ambulance did have its lights and siren activated.
"My husband, who heard this, heard the siren before hearing the crash - so the ambulance had the right of way," said neighborhood resident Cecile Srodes.
"It's the duty of drivers to pay attention," says neighborhood resident Robert Low.
Police have "not" determined which driver is to blame, but Fire and EMS spokesperson Alan Etter says it's department protocol for all emergency vehicles, regardless of the call, to stop at stop signs and red lights before proceeding through an intersection.
"This is a very difficult city to navigate, even if you have a light and siren," said Etter. "So we need the public's help to pay attention and get out of the way when you see that an ambulance or fire truck are coming."
