Jurors Return to Deliberation in Hornsby Case

Last Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Peter Messitte sent the jury home for a long Thanksgiving weekend on Tuesday, hours after he received a note in which jurors said they were "firm" in their positions. They also asked for a definition of reasonable doubt. The Judge urged the jury to try again Monday to reach a verdict.
Messitte said there would be no further guidance about the meaning of reasonable doubt. Hornsby is charged with steering a schools contract worth about $1 million to an educational technology firm where his then-girlfriend worked. Federal prosecutors allege that Hornsby and the girlfriend then split the $20,000 commission she received.
