D.C. Drivers Still Distracted

Drivers in D.C. don't seem to be deterred by the police department's enforcement of cell phone use.
The police department said that the number of tickets they've issued to drivers using cell phones without a handsfree device has increased for the third straight year. D.C Council member Carol Schwartz co-sponsored the law in 2004. She said that while it's obvious the enforcement is stronger, it's also obvious people aren't following the law.
Up until October this year, officers gave out 9,484 tickets to drivers who a cell phone in their hand.
That's already 13 percent more than the 8,358 issued all of last year.
Police spokeswoman Traci Hughes attributes the increase to more than just talking, and says people send texts and e-mails while driving, too.
She said sometimes officers choose to give drivers warnings instead of the $100 citation.
