Man Rescued From Burning Car
posted 4:09 pm Tue November 27, 2007 - Landover, Md.
Two men rescued a man inside a burning car after a three car accident in Landover Monday night.

Authorities are still investigating exactly what led up to the accident but say around 9:00 p.m., one of the three vehicles crashed through a guardrail off Martin Luther King Highway, landing upside down, then burst into flames with a person trapped inside. Fifty-eight-year-old Otho Curry was one of two men who rushed to the scene to help.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion? The car's windows wouldn't budge, so somehow Curry and a neighbor twisted the car frame to pull the man out, then threw him into this ravine where water stopped the flames.

"I know I shouldn't have jumped down in that water, jumped over that and lifted that guy, but it's something I had to do," said Curry. "He was on fire."

A couple of years ago, a specialist diagnosed Curry with congestive heart failure. Curry's doctor told him if he did any hard work, he would die.

In fact, Curry had just got out of the hospital with pneumonia just six days before the rescue.

Curry said he's feeling fine despite all the exertion of the rescue.

Authorities have not released the identity of the man Curry rescued. The victim was air-lifted to a local hospital and remains in critical condition.

Curry said someday, he would like to meet the man he helped save.

"You should have to do what you have to do to help people, and I just thank god I was able to do it," Curry said.
