Brentwood, Md. - The Prince George's County fire department is hailing a Brentwood man who noticed a burning house and rushed inside to save the occupants.
Forty-four-year-old Willie Powell was driving by the home on Volta Avenue about 2:30 p.m. Sunday when he saw fire and smoke coming from a second-floor window.
Fire department spokesman Mark Brady says Powell went to the door and alerted four children, ranging in age from 4 to 14. Then he went upstairs and found a 33-year-old man asleep in a room "full of thick, black smoke." Brady says Powell woke the man, who was able to flee as well.
Powell says he had to help because lives were at stake.
The fire was blamed on an electrical problem in an air conditioner.
