Pronger's OT goal lifts Ducks over Kings

- (Sports Network) - Joey MacDonald turned in a superlative effort between the pipes, making 35 saves, and the New York Islanders edged the New York Rangers, 2-1, at Madison Square Garden. Nate Thompson and Richard Park each scored a short-handed goal in the third period for the Islanders, who have won two games in a row after a six-game losing streak. Markus Naslund lit the lamp and Henrik Lundqvist allowed two goals on 19 shots for the Rangers, who were coming off Saturday's tough loss to Toronto, when the Maple Leafs exploded for five unanswered goals in a span of 5:21 in the third period to come away with a 5-2 decision and snapped New York's four-game winning streak.

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Niclas Wallin scored 1:52 into overtime and the Carolina Hurricanes bested the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-4, at Air Canada Centre to sweep a home-and-home set. The Hurricanes posted a 6-4 win Sunday in Raleigh. In the extra session, Tuomo Ruutu slipped the puck to Wallin, who was all alone at the point, and he let go a slap shot that beat Vesa Toskala on the glove side. Ruutu and Chad LaRose both registered a goal and an assist for Carolina, which won consecutive games for the first time since opening the 2008-09 season with back-to-back victories over Florida and Tampa Bay. Cam Ward stopped 38-of-42 shots to pick up the win. Mikhail Grabovski had two goals and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who have dropped three of their last five games. Niklas Hagman recorded a goal and an assist, while rookie Nikolai Kulemin collected two helpers. Toskala allowed five goals on 24 shots to take the loss.

This marked Ottawa's first-ever overtime win over the Capitals in eight such encounters. Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin returned to the ice after missing the previous two games while returning home to Russia to visit his ailing grandfather. Ovechkin had four shots on goal, but the Caps lost for the second straight contest. Tomas Fleischmann had the lone goal for Washington, while Brent Johnson made 42 saves.

Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Ilya Bryzgalov made 27 saves and Ed Jovanovski's first goal of the season proved to be the game-winner in Phoenix's 4-2 victory over Calgary. Shane Doan scored and recorded an assist, while Steven Reinprecht and Derek Morris added a goal apiece for the Coyotes, who had lost five of their previous seven games. Miikka Kiprusoff was off his game, stopping 18-of-22 shots for the Flames, who have dropped back-to-back contests on the heels of a six-game winning streak. Dustin Boyd and Daymond Langkow provided the scoring in the loss.

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Chris Pronger's tally just 40 seconds into the overtime session gave Anaheim a 1-0 victory over the punchless Los Angeles Kings. Jean-Sebastien Giguere recorded his second shutout of the season and 31st of his career by stopping all 35 shots for the Ducks, who have won seven of their last eight. Erik Ersberg was solid between the pipes in allowing just a goal on 27 shots for the Kings, who failed to score on six power plays en route to their fifth straight setback.

Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Kyle Wellwood had a pair of goals and Roberto Luongo recorded his third shutout of the season, as the Vancouver Canucks routed the Nashville Predators, 4-0, at General Motors Place. Mason Raymond also had a goal for the Canucks, who have won four of their last six games overall. Daniel Sedin had a goal and an assist, while his twin brother Henrik had two assists, including his 300th career helper. Dan Ellis stopped 35 shots for the Preds, who saw their two-game win streak halted.

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Jamie McGinn and Ryane Clowe scored 2:14 apart early in the third period, and the Sharks piled 49 shots on net in a 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild to remain the lone unbeaten team at home this season. Evgeni Nabokov stopped 23 shots for San Jose, which moved to 7-0 at home and leads the NHL with 22 points. Nabokov has been in net for all seven wins as the host. Dating back to last season, the Sharks have won 12 consecutive home contests and have posted at least one point in their last 16 home games. Mike Grier also scored for the Sharks, who have won five in a row overall and beat the Wild for the eighth straight time. Krystofer Kolanos had the lone goal for the Wild, losers in three of their last four games. Niklas Backstrom made 46 saves, but Minnesota's defense broke down by allowing 22 shots in the final period.
