County officials say they plan to spend up to $3.5 million to buy the homes and then hand them over to Habitat for renovation. The houses will be sold to low-income families, who will be chosen by Habitat for zero-interest home mortgages.
Rick Nelson, the county's director of housing and community affairs, says the properties will likely be in Glenmont, Aspen Hill and Wheaton. Those areas have been particularly hit hard by foreclosure problems. Officials say they aim to have the homes ready by the middle of next year.
