- (Sports Network) - Alex Ovechkin registered a goal and an assist, as the Washington Capitals (web|news) doubled up the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-2, at the Verizon Center. Tom Poti, Eric Fehr and Mike Green also scored for the Capitals, who have won three games in a row. Making his fourth straight start for Washington, Brent Johnson, named the NHL's third star for the week ending November 9, stopped 34-of-36 shots.

"We knew they were going to come out hard," Poti said. "We wanted to match their enthusiasm and match their push."

Ovechkin, the reigning MVP and Maurice "Rocket" Richard trophy winner, had been held without a goal in a career-high nine straight games.

Gary Roberts had a pair of power-play goals for Tampa Bay, which has dropped three of four on its five-game road trip that concludes Wednesday in Florida.

It was not the homecoming Olaf Kolzig envisioned. Originally selected by Washington 19th overall in the 1989 draft, Kolzig spent 16 seasons with the Capitals before signing with the Lightning as a free agent on July 1. He allowed four goals on 30 shots in defeat.

"I was really nervous, but that didn't have to do with spotting them three goals," said Kolzig, also known as "Olie the Goalie."

The veteran netminder was beaten on the first two shots he faced. Poti put Washington on the board 8:20 into the contest, and Green found the back of the net at 9:55.

Fehr then made it 3-0, one-timing a feed from Brooks Laich over Kolzig's right shoulder with 3:36 remaining in the opening period.

"If I'm those guys, I can't look Olie in the face," said disgusted Tampa Bay head coach Barry Melrose of his team's sluggish first period. "Probably the biggest game this guy has played in years and they show up and do that for him. I think those guys should be hiding their eyes when they walk past Olie Kolzig tonight."

Roberts had the lone goal in the middle stanza, and Ovechkin netted his third tally of the season before the rugged forward scored again in the game's final minute.

Entering Monday, the Lightning had allowed the least number of first-period goals (five) in the NHL this season...Washington has won six straight against the Lightning...The Capitals are 6-0-1 at the Verizon Center...Kolzig left Washington as the club's all-time leader in several goaltending categories, including games played (711), wins (301) and shutouts (35).
