Silver Spring, Md. - Environmentalists are giving the condition of the Potomac River a grade of D-plus, reflecting no change in the past year.
The Potomac Conservancy released its second annual "State of the Nation's River" report on Tuesday.
In the new report, the group focused on damage to the Potomac watershed caused by stormwater runoff laden with harmful pollutants found on parking lots, streets and roofs.
The report says these hard surfaces prevent stormwater from reaching soil that naturally filters it. Instead, the runoff carries road grease, fertilizer and other pollutants directly to the watershed.
The group is recommending that new developments be required to take steps to control stormwater.
