Prince George's County Police say at about 2:30 Saturday morning, Costa, a 22-year-old from Moorestown, New Jersey, tried to get into Cornerstone Grill on Route One in College Park. They say two bouncers wouldn't let Costa in and he punched them in the face.
A Prince George's County police officer then stepped in.
"A uniformed police officer actually witnessed this assault in progress. He attempted to intervene in full uniform and was subsequently assaulted by this young man," said P.G. Police spokesman Cmdr. Kevin Davis.
Davis says Costa punched Officer Jason Wells in the eye--injuring him. Danny Quindo says he's known Costa for years and that Quindo saw something else happen outside the bar.

"I think it was all just kind of a misunderstanding. He really didn't see who was coming up behind him. He kinda turned around and I guess he accidentally elbowed him," said Quindo.
"Athletes have a sense of entitlement sometimes and it can develop into a serious problem," said Maryland senior Mike Stahly.
Costa lost his football scholarship at Temple University after hitting a police officer in 2005. He was never charged in that incident.
The officer is on extended leave due to a badly scratched cornea. ABC 7 had no luck reaching reaching Costa or an attorney. Costa will face a judge in the next two weeks. He's now out on bond.
