Rockville, Md. - Federal authorities are seeking the medical and personnel records of two former Montgomery County (web|news) assistant police chiefs who were granted work-related disability retirements then took new jobs.

Copies of the subpoena issued by U.S. Attorney Rod Rosenstein say the records are wanted for a "criminal investigation of a suspected felony."

Former assistant chief John King is now the Gaithersburg chief of police, and former assistant chief William O'Toole now heads the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy. Both continue to receive tax-free disability payments from Montgomery County for alleged work-related back injuries.

King's attorney, Richard Finci, says Gaithersburg officials had "full knowledge of his back issues" before they hired him.

O'Toole did not respond to messages seeking comment.
