WASHINGTON - After chasing down a robbery suspect on a busy District street, D.C.'s former Mayor Anthony Williams is being called a hero.

Former Mayor Anthony Williams was a passerby when he walked upon a crime in progress. On the 1600 block of K street, a thief snatched a box containing a Dell computer from a FedEx delivery cart and walked way. That's when, according to witnesses, Williams sprinted to the rescue, startling the thief who recognized the former mayor. The thief then handed over the goods.

The FedEx delivery man, Ahmad Djelani said he didn't understand at first why the thief recognized Williams and thought the whole incident might be a joke. "I don't know why the thief knows him," said Djelani.

"I don't know who is that man but the thief said oh, it's yours I give it back," he added.

The Washington Post was the first to report the story. The victim, Amhad Djelani, is an immigrant from Indonesia. He is still confused about the incident, but is happy that an expensive Dell computer was not stolen.
