WASHINGTON - About 50 student protesters from campus chapters of D.C. Students for a Democratic Society were gathering at the entrance of the Department of Education to vocalize their frustration with loan debt.

They danced and chanted "Education is a right! Student power! Fight, fight, fight!"

The protesters also had letters delivered to national education officials requesting that they ease student college debt.

Jon Berger, a student at the University of Maryland at College Park, says education is a right, not a privilege. He says that the student protestors want to "convey that the education department needs to take steps to bail students out of loan debt."

The students planned to continue their protest at nearby Lafayette Park.

ABC 7 Talkback: Students Protesting College Loan Debt
mythoughts
I agree with diplomat 100%.  Most students graduate from college in serious debt and some of them have worked or struggle 4 and 6 years to get a couple of degrees. I don?t think students want to go to school for free, but the debt burden of the loans is overbearing, especially when there aren?t enough jobs.  The loans also give the federal government some extra money and keeps it coming for years from the American people.  I would much rather use my tax dollars on helping to educate the American people than to fund any unnecessary war like the current one.  You can call it protecting our country if you want.  Osama Bin Laden is still running around while we are killing innocent people in iraq, destroying and rebuilding another country, killing our own military and draining this economy with a very useless war. How much is it costing us a day??  In my opinion, this country has a difficult time putting education as a top priority which is totally ineffective in the long run.
