ARLINGTON, Va. - Two women died Monday morning on Interstate 66 when a car traveling the wrong way in the eastbound lanes collided head on with another vehicle, police said.

Virginia State Police and firefighters from Arlington and Faifax counties were called to the eastbound lanes of Interstate 66 near the Washington Avenue overpass about 2:16 a.m.

Investigators say a Mitsubishi Eclipse with two 17-year-old boys inside was westbound in the eastbound lanes. The car collided head on with a Toyota Corolla driven by a man with two female passengers.

"It's a difficult crash to survive," said Virginia State Police Lt. Danny Glick. "The vehicles are catastrophically damaged."

The two women in the Corolla were killed. The driver was taken by ambulance to Fairfax INOVA Hospital. The driver is a 35-year-old Falls Church man. His injuries appear not to be life-threatening, officials said.

The women have not been identified. Police said they were still working on notifying next of kin.

Emergency responers had to cut the two 17-year-old boys out of the Mitsubishi. Their injuries are also not considered life-threatening, officials said.

Police suspect alcohol to have been a factor in the crash; charges are pending against the Mitsubishi driver, who has not been identified because he is a minor.

"It's unfortunate because, I think, OK, this is another incident, another now-victim that we are going to have to help," said Jennifer Hamilton of Mother Against Drunk Driving.  "This is 100-percent preventable. You know, people make a conscious decision to drink and get behind the wheel."

The accident initially blocked all lanes of I-66, but they have all since re-opened.

Let's be realistic.  Teenagers are going to do things that they aren't supposed to.  I'd be willing to bet that every single person that has posted questioning the parental abilities did something stupid & irresponsible as a  Teenager.    You can be a great parent, but kids sneak out, they find ways to get alcohol.  The best parents can do is educate them and hope that they make better decisions than we did at their age.    Legally, the parents will probably be held responsible since the boys are minors.

It's a tragedy that 2 innocent people had to die.  But that does not mean that the 2 boys should also die.  They actually have a pretty tough sentence of living with this the rest of their lives.  This can either be a very good lesson or turn into a circle of hardships for them.

I'm not a parent who believes that my child does no wrong like so many other parents out there.  I remember what it's like to fall into peer pressure.   My son got into some trouble, but fortunately nothing major.  EVERY child does something irresponsible at some point.  It just so happens that some things end up on the news..... So it's not always the fault of the parents.

The difference is my parents didn't give me everything and didn't want to be my best friend.  They just wanted to be my parents and believe you me, if I did anything wrong, my Dad would take the belt to my behind.  Yes, I did stupid things when I was young but I never put someone's life in jeopardy.  My parents raised nine kids on a Navy Chief's pay in the 50s and 60s.  We didn't have much but we knew what was right and what was wrong.  These boys were 17 so they knew.  Yes, they are morons and should be locked up for the rest of their lifes.  Just think how you would feel if this was your kid who these idiots killed (murdered).  Stop making excuse for criminals.  At least they still have their life.
