A controversial figure in the 2008 presidential race, William Ayres was called a domestic terrorist and Barack Obama (web|news|bio) faced harsh criticism for knowing him.
Still, Ayers said he's not hiding out and he's not afraid to speak the truth as he sees it. "You have to be willing to accept there are a range of opinions across the board and you have to be willing to speak and willing to listen," Ayers said.
"Fact is," Ayers noted, "I was thrown onto the stage unwillingly and unwittingly to play a part in this campaign. I didn't volunteer for it. I didn't want any part of it."
Ayers was thrust into the spotlight during the presidential race as Republicans questioned the depth of his relationship with Obama. He calls that type of "guilt by association" a disgusting tactic. "You're in the same room with me, you're not toxic," Ayers said.
While Ayers spoke, two students silently protested his speech by turning their backs on the speaker.
"There are people who are disgusted that he's at Georgetown University," one student said. "There is a reason that all of the banners are taken down. Georgetown doesn't even want to be associated with him."
Ayers did admit he made mistakes, but he doesn't apologize for his activism. He encourages others to stand up for what they believe in. He said he has been guilty of illegal activity in the past and has paid the price for it. Now, he spends his days teaching, speaking, and promoting his books.
