Family and friends raced to the Woodland Terrace Complex. They said they are shocked about what happened there. "He was just asking him why you ain't in school you know that's what an uncle does when he sees his nephew out here you know anyway why you ain't in school," said a relative.
"I just don't understand what would make him do something like that I mean they're family what is wrong I don't understand," added family friend Aya Davis.
Relatives said the uncle, a parking lot attendant with six young children of his own, had just gotten off the bus when he saw his nephew in the courtyard. He then asked his nephew why he wasn't in school.
"They broke out into a fight and then one of his friends gave him a gun," a relative said.
Police reported the nephew's friend, also a 16-year-old boy, was taken into custody and has been released pending the outcome of the investigation. Sources said the uncle is expected to survive a shooting that has shaken an entire family. "What could make him that upset to do that his own uncle wow," said Davis.
Police have not yet released the status of the 16-year-old nephew.
